This massive, 147-acre lifestyle center in Rancho Cucamonga serves as a downtown gathering area for locals and visitors alike. As I completed my walk-about, I sauntered across the parking area to Prospect Park. That is the area that Ms. Shirk had the city promise to preserve for the people of Redlands when she donated her family’s home.

Build a Beautiful Wedding Album

The sun was up, the wind was down, and it was a perfect day to explore a place I had never visited. As I wandered the estate's grounds, I was a bit nervous in case I was approached by the Royal Guard or a security officer. Yes, that family brought the world the products that make us all much easier to be around. Facial tissues, hygiene products, toilet paper, disposable diapers, baby wipes, and so much more that we need to take a moment to thank them. If not, perhaps the lady of the house would have been correct about the commoner and the odor — just saying. Then in 1905, John Alfred Kimberly of the Kimberly-Clark paper company purchased the property.

Please do not follow mapping services that direct you otherwise as they will mislead you. After entering the gate at Highland Avenue, you will find a parking lot straight ahead. Please park and proceed around the corner to the front wrought iron pedestrian gate of the estate.

Tour

Children must be at least 9 years old to participate in the house tour. When visiting with a reservation, please arrive 20 minutes before your tour to provide ample time to park, check in at the Garden House and use the restrooms if needed. If you must arrive late, we will do our best to accommodate your reservation by adding you to the next available tour. From weddings to parties to memorial services, Kimberly Crest has been honored to host thousands of events.

The lily ponds feature radiant Koi; vivid red, pink and yellow lilies against deep green majestic lotus blossoms; and papyrus. The house was built in 1897 and is now owned and operated by Kimberly-Shirk Association, a non-Profit organization. All proceeds from weddings at the venue go to the preservation of the house and garden. Kimberly Crest House and Gardens is an exquisite French château-style Victorian mansion located in Redlands, California (San Bernardino County in the Inland Empire). It’s a unique destination and not-so-hidden gem for visitors looking to explore its beautiful gardens, learn about its fascinating history, and capture stunning photos of the estate.

The family lived in the house until 1979 when Mary Kimberly Shirk died, She was the widowed daughter of John Alfred Kimberly. The mansion sits atop a high hill in the area, which allows refreshing evening breezes to naturally cool the house's interior. The Kimberly-Shirk Association maintains the property, and continues to open the home to the people of Redlands and the general public, as well as be involved in the city of Redlands. Their mission statement describes their dedication to preserve the property and grounds, as well as share, educate, and inspire. Kimberly Crest is proud to participate in Museums for All offering free admission for up to 4 guests to any holder of a SNAP EBT card with a valid matching driver’s license or identification card.

Do you have a site fee for wedding ceremonies at your venue?

Entry inside the house is available through small group tours with ticket purchase. Special events are also offered throughout the year to immerse guests in the history of the place and raise much-needed funds to preserve the landmark for all time. Kimberly Crest is the picture-perfect setting for photography that marks those special moments and milestones in your life. If you live in Los Angeles, this venue is definitely in the same vein as Greystone Mansion and is around the same price if you’re looking for an upgraded Saturday ceremony and reception for 125 people. If I’m comparing the two side-by-side, however, I would have to choose Greystone considering the location, grounds, and parking situation.

This garden features a rose lined path from the pergola, a heart-shaped boxwood filled with roses and the “Shy Girl” statue. It remains a place of quiet reflection and comfort for many visitors today. We book only one event a day so you will be the only ones on property during your selected package timeframe. Kimberly Crest will be closed to the public on the day of your event. Guests will park in the parking lot at the bottom of Kimberly Crest.

Kimberly Crest is an estate of  restorative beauty and welcoming hospitality. Located just two miles south of historic downtown Redlands, our gates are open weekdays and Sundays for guests of all ages to find solace and inspiration in the well-manicured gardens. We are closed on Saturdays for private events and on most major holidays. The house was built in 1897 for Mrs Cornelia A. Hill, one of the pioneers of Redlands.

One of the first pioneers of Redlands, Cornelia A. Hill, built the estate in 1897. I don’t know who she was, but she had to come with some serious cash to build such a marvelous place — so, she must have been important. So, not long ago, I had a bit of business to do and found myself with hours to meander through the town of Redlands. That always confused me, but then later, I understood her meaning. When she goes shopping, and there are plenty of examples, she will spend hours looking at this and peering at that. Redlands is a wonderful town to visit, but I have not spent much time there.

Host a business retreat, celebration of life, or other special occasion at our enchanting 126-year-old landmark conveniently situated adjacent to beautiful Prospect Park. With acres of Italian gardens and the Victorian era French Chateau in the background, Kimberly Crest is an unforgettable setting for gatherings of all kinds. Our venue packages, listed below, include the use of the grounds for the number of hours listed and use of a private multi-purpose room with kitchenette and balcony along with clean restrooms. Proceeds from private events like these help our nonprofit organization preserve and share the landmark for generations to come. Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well preserved example of the Victorian Era in California.

The fountain, “Venus Rising from the Sea”, became a gathering place for family photographs and captivated the Victorian spirit. Docent-guided House Tours are 45 minutes in duration and begin on the half-hour. Standard group size is 8 per tour but on occasion may include up to 12 guests. Given the setting and group format, children must be at least 9 years old to be admitted on the standard tour. For field trips and educational tours, please see our “Group or Bus Tour” section below.

Entry inside the house can only be accessed if a group tour or a grand entrance are added on. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a Federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39-acre botanical park east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968. This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It seems Mrs. Shirk had a strong sense of community and purpose. Before her passing, she challenged the city of Redlands to find the cash to purchase the land around the estate and turn it into botanical gardens for the citizens to enjoy.

Will There Be Another Event Happening the Day I book?

kimberly crest house & gardens

Upon her death in 1979, by her wishes, Mary Kimberly Shirk donated the home to “the people of Redlands” and established the Kimberly-Shirk Association to run the home and gardens to this day. The property was sold, in 1905, to members of the Kimberly family (John Alfred Kimberly, and his wife, Helen Cheney Kimberly), known for co-founding the Kimberly-Clark paper company. This is a sprawling estate with beautiful gardens, interesting history, and plenty of photo ops. The third floor, which is not included on the public tour, has additional bedrooms and a screened sleeping porch that would have been used in the hot summer months. Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well-preserved example of the Victorian Era in California.

Weddings

For more information about hosting a private event at Kimberly Crest, click here. Our outdoor venue accommodates up to 200 guests seated at tables and 250 guests in theater-style seating. Kimberly Crest House and Gardens sits on over 6 acres and features a Victorian-style chateau and Italian Renaissance gardens.

Price is rounded up to the nearest thousand and includes tax and gratuity. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39 acre botanical garden east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised. The following year the Kimberly-Shirk Association was formed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Kimberly Crest. After Mr. Kimberly passed away, the Kimberly’s daughter Mary Kimberly-Shirk had a rose garden built to ease her mother’s grief and named it “Grandmother’s Rose Garden”.

In 1905, John Alfred Kimberly, a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark paper company, purchased the home to escape the Wisconsin winters, giving the family name to the property. When the Kimberly family purchased the property in 1905, Mrs Kimberly had the Italian gardens installed on the property. The overall property consists of the main residence (a large 7,000 square foot dwelling), a carriage house, the formal Italian gardens, and several acres of orange groves. Kimberly Crest is open to the public to walk and explore the grounds. For the comfort and peace of mind of all guests, pets are not allowed on site without advanced permission.

The property is a registered California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We offer special tours and ticket pricing for groups of all sizes and makeup, from school groups to seniors — Monday through Wednesday between 10 AM and 4 PM. Please fill out the form below to make reservations at least two weeks in advance. Groups with 30 or more guests will have a self lead tour with docents stationed in each room to answer questions. Kimberly Crest is located on Prospect Drive off Highland Avenue.

The Kimberly Crest House Tour includes a docent guided tour of the first and second floors of the petite chateau while guests learn about the families of Kimberly Crest. The tours also includes a visit to the Carriage House to see the latest of the rotating exhibits anzd end in the Carriage House Gift Shop. Kimberly Crest House & Gardens is a 6-acre estate in Redlands, California featuring a Victorian Chateau and Italian Renaissance styled gardens. In 1905 the home was purchased by Helen Cheney Kimberly and her husband John Alfred Kimberly. Mrs. Kimberly added the gardens and decorated the interior of the home as you find it today. After the Kimberlys’ death, the estate was inherited by their daughter, Mary Kimberly-Shirk.

I have a purpose in mind, such as the Orange Street Alley, and go there to experience it. The current price (at the time of writing) is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors/active military/veteran/student, and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. The architecture of the mansion has been described in different ways. It is at once a French château-style 3-story home with tall towers and turrets, and also a Victorian mansion as is common to Redlands, California. The Carriage House was built for the family horses and carriages and had a small apartment on the top floor for the caretaker. In 1897 the cost to construct both the home and Carriage House was $10,000.

Terence Hernstrom, director of gardens and grounds, revives and designs the breath-taking gardens today. The gardens include never ending Mediterranean borders, cascading fountains, lily and koi ponds, multiple terraces, curved stairways and engulfing orange groves - all reminiscent of Renaissance Italy. Begin your happily-ever-after at our enchanting 125-year-old landmark conveniently situated adjacent to beautiful Prospect Park. With acres of Italian gardens and the Victorian era French Chateau in the background, Kimberly Crest is an unforgettable setting for your special day. The 7,000 square foot, three-story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate two miles south of downtown Redlands. The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings.

Additional fees for event security and gate monitoring apply and will be based on number of hours needed. An additional $500 refundable security deposit is required for events with theater seating as well as 3-hour event packages. All other packages require an additional refundable security deposit equivalent to twice the hourly rate of the rental package.

The second floor was the personal living area for the family and includes a mezzanine with two bedrooms on each side as well as a conservatory.

After purchasing the property, the Kimberly's had Italian gardens installed around the property. No, the Kimberly Crest House is one of those estates that is a vast, stunningly crafted structure where the visitor expects a lord or lady to saunter down the billion stairs in the front garden to see who is approaching. The three-story Victorian mansion was designed in the Châteauesque style by Oliver Perry Dennis and Lyman Farwell, a Los Angeles-based partnership.[5] The building contains over 7,000 square feet (650 m2) of floor space. A near replica, now known as The Magic Castle, was designed by the same architects and erected in Hollywood[6] in 1909.

If you’re from out of town or are having a lot of out-of-town guests, I also think the limited hotel options might be an issue. However, the grounds are definitely gorgeous and unique, and for many brides that outweighs any potential negatives (and should!). The Kimberly-Shirk Association hosts a number of different events throughout the year at Kimberly Crest. They host regular guided tours of the house and grounds, as well as special events like Victorian tea parties and holiday celebrations. Built in 1897, the “castle” is a picturesque French chateau-style historical house museum.

For those requiring special accommodations, they may be driven to the top of the house to be dropped off. We encourage informal picture-taking using personal devices to share with friends and family and on social media. Such photos may not be used for commercial purposes without prior written approval. As I walked up to the mansion entrance, I noticed large water-filled ponds with dozens of beautifully colored koi, which most people know as nishikigoi. A special event that our older daughter enjoyed twice was the annual Princesses at the Castle.

Guests and staff members report feeling touched when no one is around, seeing a strange man’s apparition at the bar after hours, and hearing doors open and close on their own. In 1877, seven members of the Molly Maguires, a secret union of Irish coal miners, were imprisoned and executed at Jim Thorpe’s Old Jail Museum. Over the decades, the small stretch of dry sand became ever smaller, reduced by rising sea levels and by construction of one more massive beachfront home. Still, the Cove endured, one of the California coast’s innumerable little gems. At the end of the passage, seawater pooled, which meant wading through a mucky pond teeming with driftwood and mystery flotsam. First came the sunlight, the sand and — after a scramble across a rocky point — finally, the beach. No one could claim ownership here, where pelicans swooped and dolphins played.

The creek bed is more clogged with brush, tule reeds and driftwood than ever. When I talk to San Fernando Valley refugees, escaping another 100-degree day, it’s hard not to share their giddiness as they plop down in the moist sand, alongside Mother Nature’s timeless air conditioner. The access wars that have flared anew this summer feel as old as the rocky point at one end of the Cove and as new as the next tide. “It’s such a beautiful resource and a place for families to go and enjoy,” said Irma Munoz, chair of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, which holds title to the Cove properties.

Instead, it was quietly offered at $295 million as a pocket listing, which means it was shown only to a select group of qualified buyers. The mega-mansion spans nearly 40,000 square feet and required 7,645 cubic yards of concrete, according to Morley Construction Co., the project’s contractor. Mountain View Village, formally known as Mountain View Estates, is a beautifully designed, all-age, family and pet-friendly manufactured home community.

I called Caltrans and a watch commander at the sheriff’s station. They confirmed that there has been no serious trouble around the Cove since the fence came down, though deputies have told some people to move away when they’ve planted themselves too close to (and even underneath) homes. But I will take the many, many locals at their word when they assured me they are good with anyone visiting La Costa Beach, as long as they follow the rules. They noted that state officials have long agreed that a daytime-only gate, trash cans and other improvements are needed. Color has for too long presented a blockade at lily-white beaches all along the coast.

Some hurdles to reopening quickly, though, are deferred maintenance at the facility that need to be addressed. Silver Bay has also said it’s prioritizing absorbing as much of Peter Pan’s fleet as possible, including up in Bristol Bay, where Silver Bay will now operate two processing plants because of this Peter Pan deal. So, that will likely eat up some of the company’s more immediate expenses. And then about two weeks ago the company posted on Facebook that the plant would stay closed and encouraged people to apply to Silver Bay for work. And since then Silver Bay has also confirmed that – at least for now – it doesn’t have plans to open the facility. A new owner will take over the processing plant, but it’s unclear when the facility will reopen.

We are committed to the success of college students by providing innovative, low cost, modern, furnished apartment options with the closest proximity to campus. As I left the Cove recently, I met another former local, a sun-drenched 20-something named Henry Ward, who once lived right on Billionaire’s Beach. Behind the exclusive gates of Hollister Ranch are some of California’s most-coveted beaches and surf breaks. Back in my youth, we canyon-dwellers weren’t oblivious to our advantages. But they seemed pale in comparison to the technicolor wealth and celebrity of those who lived right on the beach.

It was especially unwelcome to us, kids lucky enough to grow up in the sunbaked hills on the other side of the coast highway, in Malibu. You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. “You couldn’t watch prime time without seeing a car running along the PCH area and see the house on the beach,” Sap said. State lifeguards are coming to grips with the loss of the historic Cove House training building at Point Mugu State Park, which collapsed onto the beach Wednesday as powerful surf pounded the shoreline. Meanwhile, Peter Pan really wasn’t saying anything about what it planned to do with King Cove.

They said that by erecting an unpermitted fence, the locals effectively blocked court-ordered access to public land. “It rains and our house is moving,” said Caitlin McKay, whose home sits not far from where Reeves pointed out the landslide’s ground zero. Increasingly, however, the rain’s effects are almost immediate, Portuguese Bend residents said. “This just gets worse by the day,” Reeves said on a recent walk through Cinnamon Lane, which she called a new ground zero for landslide movement. The city of King Cove is worried about the future after its seafood processor announced earlier this month that it will cease operations.

The ancient complex includes four historically active landslides, dubbed the Portuguese Bend, Abalone Cove, Klondike Canyon and Beach Club landslides. The oldest and largest, Portuguese Bend, was activated in 1956, starting the land’s slow descent to the sea. After initial shifts ruined about 130 homes, officials have been able to stave off extreme damage with close monitoring, ongoing remediation and a growing inventory of de-watering wells, which pump out water from underground.

Kirsten Dobroth is the Alaska reporter for Undercurrent News, which is a commercial fishing and seafood industry trade magazine. She’s been reporting on what this means just ahead of salmon season. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently awarded the city a $23.3-million grant to fund a long-term remediation project aimed at slowing the landslide, but that work is not expected to start until 2025.

Waves tore through the boatyard at Pebbly Beach on the east end of Catalina Island, upending boats and scattering lumber across the area. Rolling Hills Estates aims to shore up the slope that failed in July and destroyed eight homes. But as winter approaches, residents fear heavy rain and renewed disaster. The Rolling Hills Estates landslide in July made some homes unlivable. Rancho Palos Verdes is trying to secure state and federal aid after three more slides. The neighborhoods where Reeves and McKay live around the Portuguese Bend Riding Club have moved an average of 4 feet in the last 15 months, Phipps said.

There are approximately 400 homes in the area of the expanding landslides, with dozens already seeing damage, Phipps said. Officials know that water is fueling the increasing land movement — infiltrating layers of clay, softening it — but stopping moisture from entering the ground is extremely difficult during repeated, record-setting rainstorms. Residents are facing another wet winter storm this week, heightening concerns that new rainfall could exacerbate what’s quickly becoming an emergency situation. And the opportunists at the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA), the agency now overseeing the beach, jumped at their chance.

Record deals and tax-avoidance maneuvers: Southern California’s priciest sales of 2023

In those pre-responsibility years, we idled ferociously, trying our hardest to make summer never end. Most homes have some risk of natural disasters, and may be impacted by climate change due to rising temperatures and sea levels. No doubt that’s still a noxious motivator for at least a few people who want to limit access to the shore. On regular walks we’d see Flip Wilson, the No. 1 TV comedian of the time, out on his deck, sometimes resplendent in a robe. O’Neal, star of the totemic movie “Love Story,” reacted with admirable restraint when our feral dog, Dingo, gave chase one day and knocked the jogging star right on his butt.

She said she was infuriated when a local woman wanted to know if the newcomers were launching a beach cleanup; then started snapping pictures. Twenty-first century beach visitors don’t need our underground entryway. With the fence down, they can get from car to surf in less than a minute. Yet the Cove remained blocked by that rusted, tattered fence. The Coastal Conservancy had no staff prepared to open it to the public. That’s when the conservancy passed the lot (and an adjoining parcel purchased to widen the access) to yet another pair of state agencies.

What many students love is how Cove Student Housing offers small groups and not mass floor housing. We believe small groups are key to having an optimal experience. Visitors should know that the law doesn’t allow them to trespass under people’s homes, even for shade. Public easements allow visitors along most of the beach, but generally not within 10 feet of people’s homes.

Fishermen outside of that local fleet have historically delivered to the King Cove plant depending on the species and price at any given point. So, I think there’s a lot of people that are anxiously awaiting word on when things will be back up and running.

At Mastro's we have an array of the freshest seafood selections, like our 2-foot-tall seafood tower of chilled crab legs, shrimp and oysters served over a cloud of dry-ice. She loves how the Malibu accessways draw people from inland neighborhoods that lack open space. Finally, sometime after I’d moved away to college, the beach elitists surreptitiously had another chain-link fence installed across the tunnel entrance. A unanimous California Court of Appeal rejected their complaints. The three luminaries planned to knock down two homes, each, along neighboring Carbon Beach (now often called Billionaire’s Beach) to erect much larger homes. In exchange for permission to build, the magnates agreed in 2000 to donate a piece of the Cove to compensate for the “visual resource” their huge homes robbed from the public. A revolution arrived along the California coast in 1972, when voters approved Proposition 20, a ballot measure that grew out of concern about unchecked development.
