Starting at Point Park, take in epic views from both sides of Lookout Mountain before descending alongside vertical rock bluffs to the historic Cravens House. The most recent teardown on our list, this 1937 Cheviot Hills house was the home of author Ray Bradbury for more than 50 years. In January 2015, starchitect Thom Mayne began deconstruction of the house, much to the chagrin of Bradbury fans and local preservationists. Mayne claimed, "I could make no connection between the extraordinary nature of the writer and the incredible un-extraordinariness of the house. It was not just un-extraordinary, but unusually banal." In 1926, construction started on the palatial playground of movie star Marion Davies and her longtime love William Randolph Hearst.

William Andrews Clark Jr. was the son of Montana senator William Andrews Clark, the founder of the LA Philharmonic, and the much older brother of the infamous Huguette Clark. In the 1910s, he bought an ornate mansion in high-class Kinney Heights (today it's Jefferson Park). In the 1920s, he had a pavilion on the property torn down and in its place built a library, where he kept his large collection of Oscar Wilde materials, rare books, and fine prints. The library is now part of UCLA, which tore the adjacent house down in the 1970s because it was seismically unsound. Josef von Sternberg, famed director of The Blue Angel and Morocco, hired legendary architect Richard Neutra to design this aluminum-clad Modernist masterpiece in the early 1930s. Von Sternberg was one of the first celebrities to build in the then-rural San Fernando Valley.

He was President of the Edison Electric Co., one of the predecessors of Southern California Edison Co. Mildred Mary Myers was the daughter of George S. Myers, a cofounder of the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. Businessman John Cravens married Mildred Myers, a tobacco heiress, and built the home, the second on the 16-acre property, for $1,250,000.
This 1898 Mission Revival mansion was designed by architect John Kremple for the legendary Harrison Gray Otis, editor and publisher of the Los Angeles Times. It was built overlooking the then super-fashionable Westlake Park (now MacArthur Park). After Otis's death, the home became part of the Otis Art Institute before being demolished in 1954. Today it is the site of the Charles W. White Elementary school. Found the end of a gated drive, the home has a Zen-inspired fountain and lush vegetation at the entrance. Inside, the 3,594 square feet of open interiors has clean lines, built-ins and tongue-and-groove ceilings.
During the '30s and '40s the gardens were sold to developers, and in 1952 Ivy Wall itself was torn down. The MidCentury Modern post-and-beam house was designed by acclaimed architects Buff & Hensman and built in 1958. The gated property sits on a knoll and takes in mountain, canyon and city views.

At just under a tenth of a mile, a signed but overgrown side trail on the left leads to several more monuments. Just after this the Rifle Pits Trail splits off to the right. From here the trail gets considerably more rocky until it connects with the Bluff Trail. Right takes you to Sunset Rock but for this hike, turn left to head back up to Point Park. In 1887, mining investor Lewis Leonard Bradbury bought the house. During Bunker Hill's decline it was used by film companies and served as a boarding house for early silent film luminaries, including Hal Roach and Harold Lloyd.

The Cravens estate, a Pasadena landmark, is listed for $10.5 million. The seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate is located directly off of Orange Grove Avenue, an area once known as Pasadena’s Millionaire’s Row. Beer magnate Adolphus Busch once owned a palatial home on the Row, as did chewing gum tycoon William Wrigley Jr. On the left/west side of the Museum, a connector trail heads down the steps just outside the old stone building. Pass another view, heading down a couple sets of metal steps before reaching the intersection with the Bluff Trail to the left and the Mountain Beautiful Trail to the right.

To align their real estate holdings with their humanitarian mission requirements, the American Red Cross has decided to sell the Cravens Estate after 55 years. Using only the finest materials and world-renowned designers, artisans, and workers, the Cravens Estate boasts approximately 20,000 sq. Ft. of living space and was constructed of steel reinforced concrete, brick veneer, imported European finishes, and a Vermont slate roof. It was famous for being the most expensive home ever built in Pasadena, according to a Los Angeles Times story dated February 6, 1955.
